"Other Men's Horses" by Elmer Kelton

I should probably be embarrassed to admit reading this book -- and even more that I totally enjoyed it. A few months ago the Wall Street Journal did an article about Elmer Kelton who died in August 2009. He is considered the best Western author. I ordered this book from the library on a whim, just to check it out. High-brow literature it is not. No character development, no nuance. Just a story, well-told, that kept me totally engaged. The story takes place in west Texas in the 1880's. The protagonist is a Texas Ranger whose job it is to track down a murderer. Horse and buggies, cowboys, Indians, former Confederate Army soldiers, it has it all.

At the end of yoga, I spend a few minutes in prayer every day. First is gratitude -- and there's a lot to be grateful for. Foremost for me is that the cancer hasn't affected by daily life; I am still able to do whatever I like. I appreciate my physical freedom more than ever -- to move, work, exercise, create with no restrictions and no pain. Then I pray for others with cancer -- and this list has gotten quite long. I've had 2 men on my list since last winter when we were radiation patients at the Brigham. I sent Greg an email a few months back and it bounced back. Yesterday I decided to try to call him. His voicemail is still active but he hasn't called back. I hope he's OK. He was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. The other person, Dick, was diagnosed with gastric cancer, stage 3. I attempted to email him yesterday but it bounced back. I don't have a phone number for him. It's sobering. And makes me even more grateful for the time I still have.

Mark got back from NJ yesterday. This afternoon we will swing by and pick up Ashley, then drive back to the city for "real life". I have gotten so spoiled, sleeping in every day, snow shoeing and working in the studio. It has been a wonderful vacation.
