I am reading the July edition of Shambala Sun (tag line "buddhism - culture - meditation - life) and particularly like the article by Thanissaro Bhikku entitled "I Want To Be Loving". The focus is metta practice, and here are his phrases:
May I be/we be happy
May I/we be free from stress and pain
May I/we be free from animosity, free from trouble, free from oppression
May I/we look after my/ourselves with ease
These phrases seem more "doable" than what I have been using for these many years. How can I possibly believe that there is an end of suffering for everyone? safe and protected/ happy and peaceful/ healthy and strong/free from suffering... although those are the highest aspirations, are they not? So I wanted to share these new phrases which I will start practicing with.
Since it is now really warm, I have started to do walking meditation in the woods -- barefoot! It is particularly delightful to do after a long bicycle training ride.
My training for the Pan Mass Challenge is going really well at this point. I grew very discouraged a month or so ago. That was when I had excruciating leg cramps at night, after a long ride. Since then I have discovered that I only need to do one long ride each week (60 miles at this point), and 3-4 shorter rides. And have also learned a lot about electrolytes! Yesterday I stopped and wanted something salty. While perusing the potato chips, I noted that salt/vinegar potato chips offer the mother load of potassium and sodium. Voila!
I leave for Russia a week from today!
