My sister was in town tonight. We haven't seen each other since late June. She was in town to give a few lectures and is driving back to the Cape tonight. It is so rare that we are together, just the two of us. We went for a walk in the neighborhood, finally deciding on a Middle Eastern restaurant. She often comments that whatever I do, she soon enough follows along. It is not true, but we like to laugh about it. A few months ago I switched back to a vegetarian diet (after about a 4 year hiatus) At Easter at our brother's house, I had a piece of ham on the plate with a large visible hole -- where there had once been an artery running through another being's flesh. That did it for me. My sister told me that she has just switched as well. So Middle Eastern was just perfect.
She just finished reading a book about Buddha by Deepak Chopra, and took my copy of Thich Nhat Hahn's "Old Path, White Clouds". She also meditates. We have lots in common and I love to be with her. She wanted to hear all about my interview last night with Narayan.
Here is another Narayan tidbit. She officiates at many weddings, and told me last night that she often advises the couple, as well as the audience, that a good practice for couples is to AVOID saying 5 things per day. Not at the expense of truthfulness, but to avoid saying things that are mean-spirited. Even though you might really want to speak out!
