Here is a photo from this week. Christiane has been visiting from Atlanta with her 12 year old daughter. We're with Trish in this photo. The 3 of us traveled to Russia together last summer to set up the War and Peace Project show at Yasnaya Polyana. I just dropped Christiane and her daughter at the airport, and am home, packing up for the Pan Mass Challenge.
I'm ready! A PMC veteran told me that one really needs to rest the entire week before the event. And that by the time the event arrives, you are full of energy with well-rested muscles, and eager to ride again. That's just how it feels. I see people out on bikes, and want to be on the road, too. But soon enough... Mark will drive me out to Sturbridge which is the host hotel. Tonight is registration and dinner. I remember last year there was great food -- Legal Seafoods clam chowder, for example. I signed up to stay in a local high school, 10 minutes away from the host hotel. It seemed like a fine idea 6 months ago, but now it seems kind of stupid to sleep on a cot with who-knows-how-many others -- probably in a hot gymnasium. Oh well -- that's what it's going to be. There is a shuttle to the venue in the morning at 4:30. So I'll probably get up at 4 or whenever everyone else does -- take a shower, and be ready for the shuttle van. At the venue they give us a hearty breakfast, and we line up at 5:15. And at 5:30am, we are off! It is a well-oiled machine so everything is prompt. Hopefully I can finish within 8 hours or so...
It is very exciting, all of this. It has taken a huge amount of time over the months, and more so recently, to do the very long training rides. Today I'm eating and drinking all kinds of weird and not-so-weird foods and such, loading up on potassium-rich items. We're advised to drink extra fluid and rest today...
I'll be sure to report in after the ride... Go PMC!!
